A run of holidays meant a Saturday shift, and a table of food we all ate with our hands 🐧

Extra Saturday

Some contracts require you to work at least 18 days a month. But in the Philippines, holidays can line up back to back, so sometimes we still had to come in on a Saturday to make that number.

A Small Group

Most people wanted to work remotely on a Saturday, so very few of us actually came into the office. With fewer people around, we ended up eating lunch together.

Traditional Filipino food piled on a plastic-wrapped table, with rice, grilled meat, lumpia, and lettuce, watermelon and a tub of ice cream nearby
Eating By Hand

I already knew people ate like this, but eating with my own hands for the first time still felt strange, in a good way.

Kind Coworkers

The food itself was delicious. We ate a lot of watermelon and drank a lot too, and the people next to me kept giving me the best parts.

Mostly Pork

In Cebu, I noticed most people around me ate a lot of pork.

Ice Cream Box

And I thought a lot of Filipino people really love ice cream.

At the office

Big tubs of it, several in the freezer.

Everyone dug in during breaks and lunch.

In Japan, I had only seen tubs that big at Costco. So seeing everyone eat it so casually at work was fun.
